The right to water is being used by communities worldwide to make a difference to people’s lives, in the context of many varied issues, such as equitable access, the building of dams, environmental rights, indigenous rights, pollution, poverty reduction, privatisation, and watershed disputes.
This section illustrates just a few of the many community action projects around the right to water taking place worldwide. We hope that these examples will serve as both as information and as an inspiration to others undertaking or planning similar projects.
Many of the most sustainable and effective projects around the right to water are those undertaken by individuals and communities at the grassroots level, largely because such projects provide a sense of ownership by these communities over their own rights.
Community-managed water systems, for example, have proven not only successful in safeguarding and rejuvenating existing water resources, but also cost-effective and sustainable.
